A woman of fierce independence, Hi Soon Gym, 89, of Seoul, Korea, Columbus, OH and Havre de Grace, MD passed away peacefully in New York City on September 6, 2026, amid loving family members.

Hi Soon was born in 1937, in Seodaemun District in Seoul, the first daughter and third of six children of Kwon Il Dong and Kim So Ae. She survived the frontlines of the Korean War which included a dramatic effort to reunite with her mother after she and her younger brother were stranded by the sudden death of their father while fleeing Seoul. Encouraged by her brothers to pursue her dreams, she became a debate champion and class president, and graduated from Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul in 1962. She pursued graduate studies in the U.S. with the help of her sponsor, Professor H. Delight Maughan, and held a master’s degree in nutritional science from Washington State University.

She believed that home is what you build and family is who you find, and she found both when she met a dashing Won Golden Gym, who courted her with his own dreams as well as a sleek motorcycle. Together, they celebrated 58 years of marriage and adventure as he took her from Seattle to Corvallis to Gary, IN before settling for the next three decades in Upper Arlington, Ohio. She learned to drive in her 40s and spent her career at Ohio State University, where she managed food service for athletes and university presidents and a diverse student body.

As the first of her family to come to the United States, she was a pioneer of working motherhood and a pillar of an intercontinental multigenerational family. She devoted her life to her daughters Helen and Aimee, her beloved younger brother and his family, and dear friends especially through her Korean church network. Renowned for her smile and kind heart, she loved hosting socials of 30+ people, singing in area choirs, and welcomed extended family to the U.S. who made Columbus, Ohio their first stop for a robust welcome. She cheered for the Buckeyes, loved American TV dramas, and was known for her unique and oft surprising mix of tuna noodle casserole, kimchi, and homemade banchan dishes on a holiday table.

After retirement from OSU, she and Won moved to Havre de Grace, MD, to be closer to her daughters and five grandchildren. There, she built a new community filled with book clubs, luncheons with friends, zumba and line dance classes, Baltimore Ravens recaps, and multiple trips around the world. Her heart was always in Korea, where she made her most recent visit in 2025 as the eldest of her generation.

To her beloved grandchildren, she was known as “Halmi.” She showered them with unconditional love, cards on every holiday occasion, and visits to as many sporting events, birthday celebrations, and special events as there were days in her schedule. Home meant long walks, basement sleepovers, and boisterous dinner tables full of stories and homemade Korean feasts. She witnessed and celebrated each of their life achievements, new loves, and hopeful futures.

Hi Soon Gym is survived by her devoted husband; her daughters and their husbands; five grandchildren; her sister; sister-in-law; 11 nieces and nephews; and two dozen grand and great grand nieces and nephews.

강인한 독립심을 지닌 삶을 살아온 권희순(Hi Soon Gym) 님이 2026년 9월 6일, 향년 89세로 사랑하는 가족들이 지켜보는 가운데 뉴욕에서 평안히 별세하셨습니다. 고인은 생전에 한국 서울과 미국 오하이오주 콜럼버스, 메릴랜드주 하버드그레이스에서 삶의 터전을 일구며 살아오셨습니다.

권희순 님은 1937년 서울 서대문구에서 권일동 님과 김소애 님의 6남매 중 셋째이자 장녀로 태어났습니다. 어린 시절 한국전쟁의 참혹한 현장을 직접 겪으며 전쟁을 피해 가족과 함께 서울을 떠나 피난하던 중 아버지가 갑작스럽게 세상을 떠났고, 그 과정에서 어린 남동생과 함께 어머니와 떨어져 남겨지게 되었습니다. 이후 두 남매는 어머니를 다시 찾아가기 위해 힘겨운 여정을 겪었고, 마침내 어머니와 재회할 수 있었습니다.

오빠들의 격려 속에서 자신의 꿈을 펼쳐나간 그녀는 토론대회에서 우승하고 학급 회장을 맡는 등 뛰어난 역량을 보였으며, 1962년 서울 숙명여자대학교를 졸업했습니다. 이후 후원자였던 H. Delight Maughan 교수의 도움으로 미국에서 대학원 과정을 밟았고, 워싱턴주립대학교에서 영양학 석사학위를 받았습니다.

그녀는 ‘집은 스스로 만들어가는 곳이며, 가족은 삶 속에서 서로를 찾아가는 사람들’이라고 믿었습니다. 그리고 멋진 청년 김원근 (Won Golden Gym) 님을 만나면서 그 두 가지를 모두 찾았습니다. 자신의 꿈과 함께 세련된 오토바이로 그녀의 마음을 사로잡았던 남편과 함께 58년간 결혼생활과 인생의 모험을 나누었습니다.

두 사람은 시애틀에서 오리건주 코밸리스, 인디애나주 게리를 거쳐 오하이오주 어퍼알링턴에 정착했고, 그곳에서 약 30년을 살았습니다. 그녀는 40대에 운전을 배웠으며, 오하이오주립대학교(OSU)에서 오랜 기간 근무했습니다. 그곳에서 운동선수와 대학 총장을 비롯해 다양한 배경을 지닌 학생들을 위한 식음료 서비스를 관리하며 자신의 전문성과 능력을 발휘했습니다.

가족 가운데 가장 먼저 미국으로 건너온 그녀는 일과 가정을 함께 이끌어간 선구적인 여성이었으며, 한국과 미국을 잇는 여러 세대의 대가족을 든든하게 연결해 주는 중심이었습니다. 두 딸 Helen과 Aimee, 사랑하는 남동생과 그의 가족, 그리고 특히 한인 교회를 통해 맺은 소중한 친구들에게 깊은 사랑을 쏟으며 평생을 살아왔습니다. 환한 미소와 따뜻한 마음으로 잘 알려졌던 그녀는 30명이 넘는 사람들을 집으로 초대해 함께 어울리는 것을 즐겼고, 지역 합창단에서 노래하는 것도 좋아했습니다. 미국을 찾은 친척들에게는 오하이오주 콜럼버스가 첫 번째 목적지가 되곤 했으며, 그녀는 언제나 풍성한 음식과 따뜻한 환대로 가족들을 맞았습니다.

오하이오주립대학교의 미식축구팀 Buckeyes를 열렬히 응원했고, TV 드라마를 즐겨 보았습니다. 명절 식탁에는 참치 누들 캐서롤과 김치, 직접 만든 각종 반찬이 한자리에 오르는 독특하고 때로는 뜻밖의 조합으로 가족들에게 즐거운 추억을 남기기도 했습니다.

OSU에서 은퇴한 후에는 두 딸과 다섯 손주 가까이에서 지내기 위해 남편과 함께 메릴랜드주 하버드그레이스로 이주했습니다. 그곳에서도 그녀는 새로운 공동체를 만들어갔습니다. 북클럽과 친구들과의 점심 모임, 줌바와 라인댄스 수업을 즐겼고, 볼티모어 레이븐스의 경기 이야기를 나누었으며, 세계 여러 곳을 여행했습니다.

그러나 그녀의 마음 한편에는 언제나 한국이 자리하고 있었습니다. 2025년에도 한국을 방문했으며, 당시 가족의 같은 세대 가운데 가장 연장자로서 고향과 가족들을 다시 만났습니다.

사랑하는 손주들에게 그는 언제나 “할미”였습니다. 손주들에게 조건 없는 사랑을 아낌없이 베풀었고, 명절과 특별한 날마다 카드를 보내며 마음을 전했습니다. 일정이 허락하는 한 수많은 운동경기와 생일잔치, 특별한 행사에 빠짐없이 함께했습니다.

할미의 집은 손주들에게 긴 산책을 함께하고, 지하실에서 함께 잠을 자며, 직접 만든 푸짐한 한국 음식이 차려진 시끌벅적한 저녁 식탁에서 이야기를 나누던 곳이었습니다. 그는 손주들이 인생에서 이루어가는 하나하나의 성취를 지켜보았고, 새로운 사랑과 앞으로 펼쳐질 희망찬 미래를 함께 기뻐하고 축복했습니다.

권희순 님은 사랑하는 남편과 두 딸 및 사위들, 다섯 명의 손주, 여동생, 올케들, 11명의 조카, 그리고 20여 명의 조카손주와 그 다음 세대 가족들을 남기셨습니다.
